Photo Magazine

PACIFIC LONGBOARDER MAGAZINE from Australia is the ONLY magazine worldwide dedicated to long boarding. For 25 years they’ve aimed to be all things to all longboarders: female, male, youth to boomers, world beaters or weekend warriors, hip or not particularly. It’s all surfing, it’s all good. Intelligent, funny, often provoking, the stories are always well written and well researched, plus stunning photography. They love the beach, they love the culture.

ISSUE #107

PHIL EDWARDS – THE SURFERS & THE SHAPES
Occasionally when I’m paddling around on my Phil Edwards Model Hobie in My Phil Edwards replica shorts from YR in LA (and before I go home to slip into my Rhyn Spooner Phil Edwards Collection shirt). I’m asked, “Who is Phil Edwards?” Yes really! Well kiddies pay close attention to this issue of PLB for at least some of the answer. John Wade looks at the great man’s legacy through the lens of his signature surfboards and plenty more too. Great photos from the late ’50s and ’60s as well as a few taken recently by all the usual classic photographer suspects. Essential reading!'

GOLDY’S
The beautifully monikered Jessamyn Jean is a superb writer and accomplished businesswoman and here she looks at life in France since Covid with Robin Kegel and Robin Falxa, both extremely stylish and innovative surfers for those of you not familiar. Apparently it got just as overcrowded there as it did here but the boys found Goldy’s a ‘secret’ spot and Thomas Lodin captured the photographic evidence. Plenty of Gallic colour too including a cat photo!

A DOSE OF MAGIC – SOUTH ISLAND NZ
The Single Fin Mingle in the cosy seaside settlement of Sumner, Christchurch, is a traditional but unconventional longboarding competition which has grown from low-key local to something of international interest attracting surfers from around the globe. Last year and this year though, the very closed New Zealand border resulted in the opportunity to see the depth of logging talent across the North and South Island’s own surfing communities with a particularly high turnout of female participants. And they lucked out with some pretty solid waves too.
Words by Mischa Davis. Photos by Jono Smit and Cam Hay.

IS CHRIS HEMSWORTH GOING TO WORK AT WOOLWORTHS?
Currently a reluctant media magnet Lucy Small checks out this popular Byron Bay Surf Festival contest/festival/event in the media-magnetic centre of the Instauniverse and finds that good waves, good people and good fun are universal currency for good times. Excellent waves at Wategos enabled plenty of outstanding photos to round out Lucy’s quirky report.

THE SPACE COAST
Way over on the opposite side of the planet, Dalton Smith takes us for a spin around his home-breaks on Florida’s Space Coast. Warm water waves and a rocket - what more could you want?

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST
Full time commercial photographer Katey Shearer lives on Victoria’s rugged Otway coastline on the edge of Bass Strait. Brrrh! With some mates she took a road-trip around some of her local breaks suitably attired with 4/3 steamers and braved the challenging conditions to score some decent waves. A fire, some goss with your mates a few waves - that’s a road trip!

LENS FLAIR
Fabulous photos from the best photographers shown big over seven pages. Exceptional as usual.

UPFRONT
Malia Kaleopaa from Waikiki whose daughter Kelis also appeared on this page some years ago. How good’s that!

THE BUZZ
Brazil, extreme Pacific Ocean weather, Ireland, Lucy Small in the news on surfing equality, Gisborne, board and sunnies winners. Everything!
