Alex Martinez

Alex's hometown and birthplace Puerto Colombia is located on the paradisiacal Caribbean coast of Colombia. However, living conditions in the north of the country, which is characterized by armed conflicts, are anything but paradisiacal. Money was always scarce and as a youngster you had to be careful not to go off the rails. 

Alex came to surfing relatively late, when he borrowed a friend's board at the age of 19, which he has yet to return. From then on, Alex's life changed. With the Atlantic on his doorstep, he chased waves every day. But surfing also changed his life in other ways. It gave him direction in his previously unsteady life and helped him to find a perspective on life.

Alex has his heart and social conscience in the right place and wants to pass on to others what surfing gave him as a teenager.  He is involved with PADDLE PADDEL, an NGO that makes surfing accessible for socially-disadvantaged groups worldwide, giving them new perspective on themselves and their possibilities. 

“Surf had a huge positive pact on my life and helped me through some hard times. Now I hope to integrate more people into surfing, especially young people in my community because it gives them a focus and a passion to help them avoid getting into trouble.”
