FOTOMAGAZIN
“Coming to the beach after a long shift, seeing friends, and shooting photos has become one of the best ways for me to decompress. The long hours definitely make balance challenging at times, but they also make me appreciate those good days at the beach even more.”
Issue 45 is ready for you:
The Californian photographer Grant Musso, who saves lives as a paramedic in real life, primarily shoots analog, and preferably in the water. With a Nikonos, patience, and an eye for that one moment. No series shots, no digital rapid-fire. Instead, hours in the lineup. And when the film is full, it’s back to land first. In the interview, Grant talks about his path to photography, the balance between a demanding job and creative freedom, and why he consciously works slower... like us, which is why this issue didn’t come out in December (ahem).
In story number two, we head to the far north. Snowdrift tells the story of four women sailing around Tromsø on an old sailboat. Ski tours directly from the boat, midnight sun, and the best time of their lives. A journey that shows how close the sea and mountains can be when you have the courage to truly pursue an idea.
In the next story, we revisit the old topic “Is it permissible to photograph and post Secret Spots online?” after our in-house photographer from Canada presented his story “Locals vs Photos.” Marcus Paladino takes an honest look at this sensitive issue: cameras on the beach, distrust, localism, and the question of whether smartphones today cause more harm than classic surf photography.
In North Carolina, WAWO team member Carsten Schmidt takes us on a journey off the usual routes. Between rum distilleries, mountain towns, and brewery districts, he meets people who show how diverse this state really is.
Next up is the story “Ghost Diving.” Volunteer divers who recover ghost nets from the North and Baltic Seas and gradually make a difference. It’s about technique, motivation, and what happens after the recovery.
Anyone interested in surf history will find it in “Fiberglass Dreams.” In Tenerife, our friend Jerome Harlay talks about iconic vintage surfboards, collector passion, and what these old boards might be worth today. A love letter to craftsmanship and time capsules made of fiberglass.
The issue is complemented by “Living Wild” featuring an extraordinary house project south of Johannesburg. Oh, and “The Artist” this time is the mega talented illustrator Blake Gordon.
132 pages, printed on heavy paper, truly consumable without any rush. Please take your time to look closely and don’t stress yourself. It’s not healthy!
