hooroo is John Brodie’s personal journal of West Australia, hitchhiking around the North West Cape living in a blue tent. Filled with poems, journal entries & film photos, all delivered with the help of book guru Jeff Canham.

John’s photographs are a visceral love letter to the blinding sun and relentless dust of the Australian desert. Compiled in hooroo and annotated with his emotive surrealist poetry, this body of photographs is riddled with nostalgia, camraderie, loneliness and the remote surfspots that are unique to West Oz.

Featuring contributions from Craig Allsop (Primitive Skills Magazine), Levi North & James Finn.

ABOUT JOHN P BRODIE
Wherever you travel along the California Coast you’ll find someone who knows Brodie... and they’ll be sure to utter something along the lines of “rad human” (direct quote from Ryan Tatar) or “give John a hug from me” (Mat from Nordic Surfers Mag). The ubiquitous Toyota pick up where he used to spend his nights was a regular sight from Marin to Baja.

During his early 20s Brodie spent almost 2 years living in the house of visionary shaper Jon Wegener, working as an assistant to painter Andy Davis. Andy got Brodie a job at the inimitable Mollusk Surf Shop where he has worked on & off ever since.

As a bi-product of his transient nomadic lifestyle Brodie uses writing to process the rapid changes in his environment. A way of slowing everything down and understanding the world around him. His main focus resides in fine art photography and written material delving into the inner-reachings of travel & surfing’s subculture.

After self-publishing his first book Cha Cha Cha, a portrait of Mexico City, John spent time hitchhiking through the deserts of Western Australia and came up with his second book, hooroo, filled with poems, journal entries & 35mm photography.

Already in its third edition hooroo has been distributed worldwide leading to a cult following of photography enthusiasts & art lovers. In 2020, John held his first exhibition outside of the US at Slope Gallery in Tokyo.

These days Brodie can be found in Lagos, Portugal, fervently making art, photographs & writing.
